Frequently asked questions
Does the safety training replace asbestos expertise?
No. Anyone performing or supervising demolition, remediation, or maintenance work involving asbestos requires expertise in accordance with TRGS 519. The safety training helps to recognize asbestos and react appropriately.
When is safety training on hazardous substances mandatory?
Prior to taking up work and at least annually thereafter, orally and workplace-related (§ 14 GefStoffV).
Is online safety training legally permissible?
Yes. Safety training may be conducted electronically if the content is workplace-related, comprehension is tested, and employees can ask questions of a competent person at any time (DGUV Regel 100-001 (rules of German statutory accident insurance), Abschnitt 2.3). Armstrong tests comprehension with knowledge questions and provides a question function.
How is the safety training documented?
Upon completion, each person receives a certificate with their name, date, topic, and the result of the knowledge test. Participation can be retrieved by the employer at any time in the participation matrix – this provides proof of documentation in accordance with § 4 Abs. 1 DGUV Vorschrift 1.
About this course
The training course “Demolition Work—Working Safely, Identifying Asbestos” provides essential knowledge about safely carrying out demolition work and handling specific hazardous materials. Participants first learn exactly what demolition work entails, what methods are available, and which preparatory steps—such as risk assessments, structural analyses, and hazardous substance surveys—are mandatory before work begins. A central focus is on identifying asbestos and the hazards it poses; the course explains the legal requirements of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance as well as the necessary protective measures in contaminated areas. In addition, the course covers general safety precautions for all demolition procedures, the safe use of heavy equipment and manual labor, and the handling of biological agents. The goal is to effectively prevent accidents and health hazards by ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities, know how to respond correctly in an emergency, and can apply the most important safety rules in practice.
